RFID running wheel for rodent home cagesInside view of a RFID mouse running wheel

The Biobserve RFID running wheel combines state-of-the-art animal identification with long term activity and motor function measurement in the home cage. This allows for the assessment of individual activity patterns under conditions of reduced unspecific stress or enrichment of home cages in order to increase the validity of your entire experiment.

Individual home cage activity

Measuring individual general activity of group housed mice and rats on a high-throughput basis in standard home cages is difficult, expensive and often not reliable.
Running wheels are a common and well established method to measure activity and circadian rhythm in rodents.
By combing a home cage fitting running wheel with a technique to identify individual animals reliably, Biobserve offers a cost effective solution to measure individual activity in group housed rodents in a standard home cage environment.
This provides you with the possibly to dissect unspecific (e.g. individual differences in susceptibility to stress) from specific effects (e.g. deficits in motor function), which might not be possible in non-home cage-based approaches.

The RFID running wheel

The running wheel is made out of aluminium. It is equipped with a RFID antenna and can only be accessed through a short tube like entry containing this antenna. During entering the wheel, the animal is identified by its RFID chip implant and all activity of the wheel is assigned to this animal.

RFID running wheel for mice and rats (rodents)

The durable RFID running wheel is designed for heavy usage and fits into every home cage. The perspex partition can be adapted to the exact cage dimensions.

The wheel delivers the following data

  • Animal ID
  • Time
  • Direction of rotation
  • Speed
  • Activity Duration

Individual activity plans

You can lock the wheel remotely to allow activity only at certain times or only for certain durations. You can define these parameters for each animal individually.

Motor function, rehab, aging

You can remove rungs to configure irregular patterns to investigate motor function or provide a more challenging rehab task.

No RFID required? No problem.

The wheel is also available without the animal identification system for single housed animals.

RFID running wheel in a rodent home cage

Equip your standard home cages with the RFID running wheel and acquire individual activity data for group housed animals in an easy way. This cost-efficient solution is easy to install and made for long term usage.
